The 2012 Kasabias Fiji Open was held from 11-13 January 2013 at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva, Fiji. The event attracted international representation from Australia, Kiribati and Nauru. Following three days of intense competition, there were a series of positive results for Fiji athletes, with a strong turn out in the junior age groups.
The young Olav Dahl from Australia performed very impressively in the U15, U18 and U21. However he had some tough matches and was upset by Fiji’s Young Jun Park in the U15 Boys Singles and Doubles and gained revenge in the U18 Boys Singles and Doubles with all matches going the full distance
Also impressive was Choy Freddy of Kiribati who won the Mens Singles, Mens Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
Other international players were Obrian Itaia and Oxyna Gobure of Nauru. Itaia a left hand attacker reached the semi finals in the Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles and finals in the Mixed Doubles. Itaia upset some of the higher ranked Fiji players in the Men’s Singles. Oxyna, 17 years old was the number one seed in the Women’s Singles was upset by Fiji’s Harvi yee in the Women’s Singles Final losing 9-11 in the 5th. However she easily won the the U18 and U21 Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles titles and collected a runners up medal in the Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles
Fiji’s Harvi Yee collected the treble in the Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
Young Jun Park, a cadet and member of our national juniors and senior teams also won the U15 Boys Singles and Doubles, Men’s Doubles and runners up in the U18 Boys Singles and Doubles.
The star of the tournament was undoubtedly 11 year old Sally Yee who won the U13 Girls Singles, U15 Girls Singles and Doubles, U18 Girls Doubles, as well as the B Grade Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles with her mother.
