Tough opening day for Oceania
Australia and New Zealand have both failed to post a win on the opening day of action at the 2017 ITTF World Junior Championships in Riva del Garda, Italy.
The New Zealand girls went down 3-0 in their matches against Egypt and Germany. The Australian girls also couldn’t post a win in their matches against Czech Republic and Italy. Holly Nicholas was able to notch up a 3-1 win against Italy’s Marcella Delasa, getting the Aussies on the board.
It was a similar story in the boys’ event, with Day 1 providing tough opening encounters.
The Australian’s had some success with Benjamin Gould posting a win against Egypt’s Ahmed Elborhamy. However the team went down 3-1 and then were unable to get on the board against Sweden, despite a five game encounter by Bob Liang against Martin Friis.
The Kiwi’s also couldn’t find a win. Despite Alfred Dela Pena taking India’s Manav Vikash Thakkar to five games, they went down 3-0 to India and Argentina.
