It was a tough opening day for Team Oceania at the 2018 ITTF World Cadet Challenge in Tottori. The group stage concluded with both the boys’ and girls’ teams unable to get a win on the board.

The matchups against Team Hopes proved the closest, with both Oceania teams going down 3-2.

In the boys, Nathan Xu led the team with two wins against the Hopes, defeating both Iulian Chirita and Izaac Quek. The match went down to the decider, with Finn Luu coming up short against Izaac Quek, losing a nail biting five games match.

It was a similar situation in the girls’ half. Both Jiayi Zhou and and Danni-Elle Townsend were able to defeat Emily Tan. But a decisive third win went wanting and the team had to make do with a 3-2 defeat.

For Danni-Elle Townsend there was some consolation in defeat.

“I played the World Cadet Challenge two years ago in Shanghai, but wasn’t able to win a Singles game. Today I got my first win at a Cadet Challenge, so I’m happy about that, but the team still came up short. Hopefully we can keep improving and secure a team win.” Danni-Elle Townsend

The teams now move in to the playoffs for positions 5-8. In the Boys’ event Oceania will face Latin America, while the girls will be up against Europe.
