Lay dropped just two games on her way to the final, where she defeated Miao Miao 4-0 (11-4, 11-1, 11-9, 11-7). The win means Lay will be able to defend her ITTF-Oceania Cup title in 2018.
Meanwhile Heming Hu had to fight back from a three game deficit, after surviving a match point against Chris Yan in the fourth. Hu was able to take the match 4-3, winning in deuce in the final game (11-8, 11-3, 15-13, 11-13, 6-11, 4-11, 13-15). The Rio Olympian will be competing in the ITTF-Oceania Cup for the first time.
The men’s event contained a number of surprises with David Powell, the 2017 ITTF-Oceania Cup winner, having to make do with a sixth place finish. Meanwhile, Rohan Dhooria was able to take a place on the podium after negotiating his way through the qualification rounds.
