We’re a month out from the 2017 ITTF-Oceania Cup and the region’s top athletes have begun preparations for their trip to Fiji.
New Zealand’s Alfred Del-Pena is one of those athletes and he is making sure to hit peak form when he heads to Suva in April to compete in Oceania’s premier event.
The rising junior is spending two weeks at the Lily Yip Table Tennis Center in New Jersey, USA, to help him prepare for the event.
With local league matches, tournaments and training both on and off the court, Dela-Pena is in for a busy fortnight.
“The idea for me bringing him here was to expose him to a higher level of play than domestic competition in New Zealand so hopefully he can raise his game and get some better ideas about how to tackle the opposition that are seeded above him.” Matt Hetherington
While qualifying for the 2017 Leibherr Men’s World Cup would be a dream run for Dela-Pena, his top priority is just to get amongst the action.
“I’m looking forward to playing every name on the list and racking up as much experience as I can.” Alfred Dela-Pena
Soon he will be trading the New Jersey snow for the Suva sand, but first a trip back home.
“I’m going home in a week to train with the rest of the boys back in New Zealand so we’re all in for a good run in Fiji.” Alfred Dela-Pena
