The highly accomplished Australian Women's Table Tennis team has been announced for the K-Sports 2013 ITTF-Oceania Cup, to be staged in Bendigo, Australia later this month
The team consists of three London 2012 Olympic Games representatives, and between the three of them they have nine Olympic Games under their belts! Earlier this year they place 5th at the ITTF World Team Classic in Guangzhou, China.
Leading the charge is Jian Fang Lay, who learnt the art of Table Tennis from a very young age. "I began playing table tennis in my homeland, China, when I was 7 years old. When I first started I would try to run away after school to avoid coaching sessions, but through the support of my father I continued, and grew to love the sport."
"My greatest achievements have been representing Australia at four Olympic Games, and claiming three silver, and two bronze medals at the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games."
Making the last 64 at the LIEBHERR 2013 World Table Tennis Championships in May this year, Lay goes into the event with strong form.
Lining up alongside Lay are her teammates from the London 2012 Olympic Games, Miao Miao and Vivian Dederko.
Miao has participated in five ITTF World Cup's, a record for the Oceania region, however she has been absent since 2009. "I will be looking to bring my best performance to gain the ticket to the World Cup".
As for who the strongest opposition will be, Miao finds her fellow Australian team mates, as well as top players from New Zealand as the biggest challenge. "We have been competing against each other for over 15 years, and have played each other many times, we know each others games very well, and this is what makes the challenge even harder."
Australian National Head Coach, Jens Lang, is seeking strong results at the K-Sports 2013 ITTF-Oceania Cup "We want to further manifest our dominant position as the leading table tennis country in Oceania, and our goal is to improve on last year's performances in Fiji and win the Gold medal in both events."
