The Australian team for the upcoming K-Sports 2013 ITTF-Oceania Cup held in Bendigo, Australia from 30 June – 2 July, has been given a boost with the addition of Robert Frank and David Powell into the line up.
Frank, gained considerable experience at the age of 23, when he was a member of the Australian team at the London 2012 Olympic Games, will be looking to go one step further this year at the Oceania Cup and grab hold "After being runner up in the ITTF-Oceania Cup Men's Singles in Melbourne (2009), Adelaide (2011) and Fiji (2012), I am hoping to go one better this time and win".
Frankie, as his friends know him, has grown up playing the sport of table tennis in Melbourne, Australia. He first started playing table tennis when his grandmother signed him up for a program at the age of nine. "The program was called Search for a Star at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in Melbourne. I won weekly training for a year, and it all went from there."
Following a stellar junior career, which saw Frank compete in five World Junior Championships, he broke into the Australian Senior team for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and partnered up with William Henzell to finish fourth in the Men's Doubles.
Melbournian, David Powell, brings more youth to the team at the age of 22, andsees teammate William Henzell as his toughest opposition "He is the stand out in the Oceania region - he is the one to beat."
However, Powell will be looking to follow on from strong form earlier this year, which saw him capture the Australian Top Ten title, an event that pitted the top ten ranked athletes in the country against each other.
The recent run of good results for Powell on the 2013 domestic season is largely due to the hard work undertaken playing professionally in Poland during 2012. "My club in Poland, AZS Politechnika Rzeszowska helped me tremendously with my preparation through high quality training and competition week-in week-out."
Both athletes will be aiming for their best results to book their ticket to the LIEBHERR ITTF Men's World Cup to be staged in Verviers, Belgium later this year.
