Table Tennis New Zealand have announced their entries for the upcoming K-Sports 2013 ITTF-Oceania Cup to be held at the Bendigo Stadium from 30 June – 2 July.
The women's defending champion, and four time Olympian, Chun Li Li leads the charge from across the Tasman with enormous experience, having also captured the Women's Singles Gold Medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
Li, of the Counties Manukau club situated in Auckland, was quick in her assessment of the event "to win again, and book my ticket to the World Cup". Li claimed the Bronze Medal at the 1997 ITTF World Cup staged in Shanghai, China. However, this year she must first qualify for the event, she finds the toughest opposition will come from the Australian squad, which also consists of two four-time Olympians. "All the Aussie's are the key threat to my title defense, and my ticket to the World Cup."
Looking to create some waves in the Women's Singles event is Sarah Her-Lee, having played professionally in Germany during 2012, she will be looking to bring those experiences to the table "this time my goal is to do better by reaching the semi finals or the final. However it will be important to take one match at a time."
The Kiwi's charge in the Men's event will be lead by Phillip Xiao, the current Under 21 Oceania Champion, and biggest threat to Australian dominance. "I have reached the semi finals the past two years, and following good performances at the Commonwealth Championships and World Championships in May, I will be fighting hard to gain my ticket to the World Cup." claimed Xiao.
New Zealand have not had a representative as the ITTF Men's World Cup since 2003, when Peter Jackson competed in a record ninth edition of the event.
