The Singles Events at the London 2012 Olympic Games have been played, and new champions have been crowned. In the Women’s Singles event, the Asian countries of China, Singapore, Japan and Korea continued to display why they are the best in the world.


The Bronze Medal Match saw a showdown between Kasumi Ishikawa (JPN) and Feng Tianwei (SIN). Both athletes are national heroes in their country, but on the day only one would be celebrated. It was Feng Tian Wei who claimed the Bronze Medal.

Once again the Gold Medal Match was a showdown between two Chinese athletes – Ding Ning (CHN) and Li Xiaoxia (CHN). In previous encounters Ding Ning had prevailed, including the 2011 World Championships, and 2011 World Cup, however she was unable to complete the Career Grand Slam, and this day it was Li Xiaoxia’s turn to shine.

The Men’s Singles Event saw a number of surprise results in the earlier rounds, however when it came down to the business end of the event there was no surprise that China and Germany featured in the medal matches.

The Bronze Medal Match saw Dimitrij Ovtcharov (GER) line up against Chuang Chih Yuan (TPE). The match see-sawed with both players feeling nervous due to the occasion, however it was Dimitrij that was able to hold his nerves best and come out on top to claim a career defining Olympic Medal in the Men’s Singles Event.

Following successful results in the Semi Finals, the Gold Medal Match saw Wang Hao (CHN), competing in his third straight Gold Medal Match at the Olympic Games, face compatriot, and World Champion, Zhang Jike (CHN). The current World Number 1, Zhang Jike showed why he is considered the world’s best in a dominate display throughout the match to claim the Olympic Gold Medal in his first attempt.
