Fiji’s Grace Yee caused the biggest upset this morning in Bendigo at the ITTF-Oceania Youth Olympic Games Qualification Tournament as she toppled the top seed in the opening round.

Yee surprised the home crowd as she defeated Australia’s Matilda Alexandersson 4-2. The Fijian held her ground and stayed close to the table. Yee’s short pimple backhand attacks were on song and it looks as though she has found her timing quickly here in Bendigo.

“I’m really happy with the match. Winning against the top seed has definitely given me confidence for my next matches. But there is still a long way to go.” Grace Yee

It was a slow start for Alexandersson, the number one seed here in Bendigo. But she found her footing in the second match and won in four straight games against teammate Michelle Wu.

There was less trouble for the top seed in the Boys’ Singles as Benjamin Gould won his opening encounters in straight games.

Meanwhile, Papua New Guinea’s Geoffry Loi put up a fight against Australia’s Mateo Dvorani. Loi notched up two games up on the board and looked in contention the entire match.

The road to Buenos Aires looks like it is going to be long and bumpy ride.
