New Zealand’s Matthew Ball has defeated David Powell 4-3 to cause a massive upset during the first day of action at the 2018 ITTF-Oceania Cup in Port Vila, Vanuatu.

” I’m stoked. We’ve had some close matches recently. This is a huge win.” Matthew Ball

Powell, the defending Men’s Singles Champion, powered his way to a 3-0 lead. But the Australian seemingly wilted in the steamy conditions, while Ball found his rhythm.

“I struggled with David’s serve at the start. But as things got towards the last few sets I was able to get on top of it.” Matthew Ball

While the Kiwi may be confident with his opening win, there are still plenty more matches to come.

“There’s still a job to be done and more games to come.” Matthew Ball
