The Mixed Team of Australia, New Caledonia and USA have combined to claim gold, taking down China 3-1 in the final of the Cadet Boys’ Team Event at the 2018 ITTF Junior Circuit Cook Islands Junior & Cadet Open.

It was a stunning upset, particularly when considering what went down just twenty four hours before. The Mixed Team had lost to China the previous day by the convincing score line of 3-0.

The USA’s Aditya Godhwani opened the Mixed Team’s account with a stunning come from behind victory, winning 3-2 (6-11, 6-,11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8) against Sun Haoran.

Australia’s Finn Luu was next to the plate. The young Aussie held his ground against the towering opponent of Wang Hongxiang, but couldn’t get a game on the board, going down 3-0 (12-10, 11-9, 11-9).

Luu and Godhwani paired up in the doubles encounter; it was a match that proved to be pivotal. The pair seemingly smoked their opponents, winning 3-0 (12-10, 11-5, 11-8), to put the Mixed Team just one game shy of the gold medal.

Godhwani then showed his class. The young talent from USA brought home the gold medal for the team with a 3-1 (6-11, 11-3, 11-2, 11-8) win over Wang.

While New Caledonia’s Emmanuel Bruchard supported from the bench during the final, he played his part picking up some solid wins in the earlier stages of the event.
