July 4, 2018
Oceania teams are off to a great start in the U15 Cadet Boys’ Team Event at the China Junior & Cadet Open in the city of Taicang, with both teams in action advancing to the quarterfinal.
After narrowly going down to Chinese Taipei 3-2 in the morning, the mixed team comprised of Australia’s Finn Luu and New Zealand’s Nathan Xu were able to see off Hong Kong, China 2, winning with a 3-1 scoreline. Impressively, Xu is so far undefeated in his singles encounters.
Meanwhile, the team from Australia made up of Raymond Zhang and Nicholas also followed a similar pattern. The Aussie duo held strong for a 3-1 win over Thailand, before going down to China 1 later that evening.
With both teams recording one win and one loss, they finished second in their group and progressed through to the quarterfinal. The mixed team will be up against Japan, while Team Australia will have to contend with the local crowd as they face China B.
In the Junior Girls’ Team Event, New Zealand’s Hui Ling Vong has secured her mixed team a massive win over Hong Kong, China. With the score level at 2-2, it was up to Vong to play the decider. What could have been a close encounter ended up being swift work for the Kiwi, who won the match in straight games to give her team the victory.
Vong’s team now sits at equal second in the group, with their final match to come later today.
