Hu extends lead and Lay joins the leaderboard
August 28, 2018
The 2018 ITTF-Oceania Tour | Australia has concluded with Australia’s Heming Hu taking back to back tour titles.
Staged 25-26 August, Hu picked up the Men’s Singles title on the Gold Coast by defeating Kane Townsend 4-2 (-8,4,-6,8,8,8) in a closely fought out final. It was a solid performance from Hu, having earlier in the day survived a seven game quarterfinal scare against young gun Hayden Green.
With the win Heming Hu has extended his lead at the top of the tour standings, sitting well clear of the other contenders with 2000 points.
In the Women’s Singles Jian Fang Lay made her first ITTF-Oceania Tour appearance in style, winning the event with a clean sheet. In the final Lay defeated Parleen Kaur 4-0 (6,7,5,6) to bag 1000 points in the race to the 2019 ITTF-Oceania Cup as well as AU$1500 in prize money.
Despite going down in the Men’s Singles final, Kane Townsend went on to dominate the doubles events and turned it in to a family affair. He took out the Men’s Doubles with brother Wade and the Mixed doubles title with sister Danni-Elle, who also went on to win the Women’s Doubles title with Parleen Kaur.
