Competition kicked off today at the first stop of the 2019 ITTF-Oceania Tour held in Noumea, New Caledonia with Vanuatu’s Ham Lulu causing major upsets in the Men’s Singles.

Lulu swept past his group without dropping a single set to meet host nation’s Emmanuel Bruchard in the round of 16. The New Caledonian played a powerful game on his home turf, taking 3 games, but ultimately Lulu proved to be the stronger player. Lulu will be facing New Zealander Nathan Xu in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Men’s singles top seeds have all made it through to the quarterfinals unscathed. First seed, Dean Shu cruised through his opening matches to set himself up for a quarterfinals match against New Caledonian Laurent Sens.

In the Women’s Singles, New Caledonia’s Solenn Danger dropped only one set, defending her top seeding at the event. The local star will meet Stéphanie Qwea from Vanuatu next who will be making her second appearance on the ITTF-Oceania Tour. It will be a tough match but Qwea will definitely be looking to make a mark in her first quarterfinal appearance.

With a share of $4,000AUD in prize money on the line, plus precious points as athletes try to qualify for the 2020 ITTF-Oceania Cup, the final day of action is certainly going to be lively.
