Belrose and Tapper, champions in Tahiti

Tahiti’s Alize Belrose and Australia’s Melissa Tapper have taken the esteemed Men’s and Women’s titles respectively at the ITTF Oceania Tour | Tahiti after an exciting two days of competition in Papatee. The event saw over 50 competitors from all over the Oceania region competing for titles and precious points to qualify for the 2020 Oceania Cup.
In the Men’s Singles, Alize Belrose maintained local pride and carried on his brother Oceania Belrose’s legacy, defeating Vanuatu’s Yoshua Shing for the title. After an initial few tight sets, Belrose was able to see off the challenge from Shing and went on to win the match 4-1 (10,10,3,-8,7). It was a dominant display all weekend from Belrose who had breezed through all his earlier matches with a clean sheet.
Melissa Tapper, making her first appearance on the 2019 ITTF Oceania Tour dominated the Women’s Singles, claiming the top prize without dropping a single set. She defeated Tahiti’s Heimoe Wong 4-0 (2,4,7,3) in the final to bag 500 points in the race to the 2020 ITTF-Oceania Cup as well as $2600 AUD in prize money.
Tapper added a second title to her haul, teaming up with Tahiti’s Bydhir Carnet to win the Mixed Doubles title against Shing and Wong.
Belrose and Tapper now join the leaderboard on the ITTF Oceania Tour Standings and have set themselves up well to qualify for the 2020 Oceania Cup. With only two events left for athletes to qualify, next month’s event in Australia is expected to be action-packed with the Oceania Olympic Team Trials being held right before the tour starts.
