Green and Gold affair: Hu and Lay dominate in Tonga

The 2019 ITTF-Oceania Tour has finished with a bang in Nuku’alofa, Tonga with Australia’s Heming Hu and Jian Fang Lay dominating the event and going home as champions of the 2019 ITTF Oceania Tour | Tonga and securing their spots at the 2020 ITTF Oceania Cup in Papua New Guinea later this year.
In the Men’s Singles, Heming Hu was in total control the whole event, winning the title without dropping a single set. He defeated teammate Xavier Dixon 4-0 (4,5,4,9) in a display of dominance and avenging his loss to Dixon earlier this year at the Australian Olympic Qualifications. Having lost to New Zealand’s Nathan Xu earlier this year in the finals of the 2019 ITTF Oceania Tour | Vanuatu, the 2019 ITTF Oceania Cup champion has now secured his spot for another ITTF Oceania Cup with this win and will be looking forward to having a chance to qualify for another ITTF World Cup.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Singles, it was smooth sailing for Jian Fang Lay all the way to the gold medal with the Australian powerhouse not dropping a single set the whole event. She defeated Fiji’s young star Grace Yee 4-0 (6,5,6,3) to claim her second title on the 2019 Tour having won the event in Mornington in December last year. With two wins on the scoreboard, Lay goes into Papua New Guinea at the top of scoreboard as the only female player to win two tours events this year. Having won five previous Oceania Cup titles, Lay will definitely be looking to extend her legacy by another year.
As the 2019 ITTF Oceania finishes up, a huge congratulations to all the athletes who have competed across the six events all over the region. Table Tennis will be taking over the Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea from the 30th – 31st May as Oceania’s top athletes battle it out for a chance to compete at the ITTF World Cup.
