International Table Tennis Federation – Oceania (ITTF-Oceania) is pleased to announce that two Oceania Officials: Fanny Ho and Stephen Gillespie, have been selected by World Table Tennis (WTT) and the ITTF Umpires and Referees Committee to officiate at the WTT Grand Smash Singapore and the FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China.

The WTT Grand Smash Singapore 2022 event is to be held from 7 – 20 March. The WTT Grand Smash Singapore is one of the four pillars on the WTT calendar, with each Grand Smash awarding equal World Championship points to players. There will be 64 Men and 64 Women players, including the top 50 players in the world. Men’s and Women’s Doubles will feature 24 teams each, including the top 20 teams in the world. Mixed Doubles will feature 16 teams, including the top 14 teams in the world.

Australian umpire Fanny Ho, an ITTF Blue Badge accredited umpire and an ITTF accredited International Referee, has been nominated to be an International Umpire for the WTT Grand Smash Singapore event. 

Over the years Fanny Ho has officiated at various international events such as: 

  • Commonwealth Games – Glasgow (2014) & Gold Coast (2018)
  • Olympic Games – Rio (2016)
  • World Championships – Tokyo (2014), Suzhou (2015) & Halmstad (2018)
  • Australian Qualification Tournament for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games Stage 1 – MSAC (2019)

Fanny has umpired and refereed in many other International Open events overseas and within Australia. Fanny was also selected to umpire at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games, but due to the ongoing virus was forced to withdraw due to a flight cancellation.

The FISU World University Games will take place from 27 June – 7 July 2022, in Chengdu China. Originally this event was supposed to be held in the summer of 2021 but was postponed due to COVID-19. For this event, table tennis is one of the youngest compulsory sports in the program of the Summer Universiade but it has a long history within the FISU World University Championships. The countries attending the FISU World University Games are authorised to have a maximum of ten (10) competitors. The events to be played are Men’s & Women’s Team events, Men’s & Womens Singles and Doubles events as well as mixed doubles. 

Australian umpire & referee Stephen Gillespie from Table Tennis New South Wales (TTNSW) is qualified as a ITTF Blue Badge accredited umpire and an ITTF accredited International Referee who has been reappointed as a Deputy Referee at the FISU World University Games.

Over the years Stephen has officiated at various Oceania and International events such as: 

  • World Championships – China (2015), Sweden (2018), Hungary (2019)
  • Hong Kong Open (Pro Tour) – Hong Kong (2018)
  • ITTF World Tour China Open – China (2019) 
  • Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games – Japan (2021)

Stephen has a lot of umpiring experience. He qualified as a State umpire in Australia in 2003. Since then, he has officiated at numerous national and international events with distinction.
